If you have started searching for a career coach around Charleston or Mount Pleasant, you have probably noticed the field is crowded and hard to compare. Everyone sounds encouraging. Almost nobody tells you how to choose.

I coach here in the Lowcountry, so I have a point of view on this. But my goal below is to help you pick well even if that turns out to not be me. A good fit matters far more than a good website.

Does it matter that they are local?

Less than it used to, and more than you might think. Most coaching happens over video now, so you are not limited to your zip code, and that is a good thing. It means you can choose for fit instead of proximity.

That said, a coach who knows the Charleston area brings something useful. They understand the local job market, from the hospitality and tourism world to the growing tech and manufacturing employers around the region, and the reality of what a career pivot looks like here. If in-person matters to you, meeting someone face to face in Mount Pleasant can also make the work feel more grounded. Decide which you want, then filter accordingly.

What to actually look for

Beyond a warm first impression, these are the things worth checking.

  • Real credentials or a real track record. Coaching is unregulated, which means anyone can use the title. Look for training, a relevant background, or clear evidence of results. A counseling or assessment background is a plus, because so much of career work is about understanding how you are wired.
  • A focus that matches your situation. Some coaches specialize in executives, some in new graduates, some in career changers. You want someone who works with people in a spot like yours.
  • A clear process. A good coach can explain how they work and what the first few sessions look like. Vague answers here are a yellow flag.
  • Reviews from people like you. Read what past clients say, and notice whether their starting point resembles yours.
  • Fit. This is the big one. You are going to be honest with this person about your fears and hopes. If the conversation feels easy and safe, that counts for a lot.

Questions worth asking on a consultation

Most good coaches offer a free intro call. Use it. A few questions that cut through the noise:

  • Who do you usually work with, and what do they come to you for?
  • What does a typical engagement look like, and how long does it tend to run?
  • How do you approach someone who does not yet know what they want?
  • What does it cost, and how is it structured?
  • How will we know it is working?

You are not being difficult by asking. A coach worth hiring will be glad you did.

What career coaching tends to cost here

In the Charleston area, sessions generally land somewhere between about $100 and $300, and many coaches offer packages rather than one-off meetings. Price usually tracks with experience and the depth of the work. The number matters, but so does what you get for it, so ask what a package includes before you compare on cost alone.

How I work, in case it helps

I am based in Mount Pleasant and I work with people across the Charleston area in person, and with clients around the country online. I bring a Master's in Counseling and 25 years of teaching personality assessment to the work, which shapes how I help people find a direction that actually fits them rather than one that just looks good on paper. And I start everyone with a free 15-minute consultation, because you should not have to pay to find out whether we are a good match.

If you are weighing a change and want a real conversation about it, I would be glad to talk. And if you decide someone else is the better fit, I hope this made that choice a little easier.
